2010 Hibbing Disc Golf Club

A new year, a new board and a whole new beginning

I understand that determination was made to sell off one of the portable Mach 3 baskets owned by the association. Apparent determination was reached to offer persons a chance, for $1, to throw a certain distance, and with a successful shot, win one of these portables. Respectfully, I have some questions:

1. Who is the person/officer that is in charge of setting up this program?
2. What is the official distance required to throw to hopefully win this basket?
3. Are there certain events/dates/times when this opportunity will present itself?
4. Who collects the money?
5. Is there an official posting that establishes criteria for this opportunity, i.e. distance, date, etc.?
6. Is there a check-and-balance on someone opening up the contest? How are members assured that on any given date that $10 (arbitrary) was collected?
7. Should the opportunities to win that basket be posted ahead of time? For example, if we know ahead of time that this opportunity will be presented, we may consider attending and taking some shots at it.
8. Who opens the competition?
9. Will the portable be replaced when someone wins it?
10. These baskets are HDGA assets. Is HDGA membership required to compete?
11. Is there a designated pin that will serve as the official target? Is it the practice pin?

Without official parameters of a throwing contest such as this, especially the location of the pin, tee, and distance, I am uncomfortable with its existence. Not that it will happen, but if the three criteria listed above are not consistent, this opens things up for inconsistency and controversy. Allow me to explain:

An officer decides, on the spur of the moment, to open up the contest prior to a Monday night scramble. Only one person hears that the competition will be taking place. The officer decides that the distance to throw will be 12 inches. The person paying a dollar drops their disc into the basket and wins a portable basket.

No disrespect intended, folks. I understand the premise is to generate revenue for the HDGA, but without specific guidelines conceived and posted to all members prior to implementation, confusion will result.

I belive alot of these points have already been agreed on by the Board members that decided to do it. There is a set distance. I have seen people throw at least 3 differnt nights all on official HDGA run events, tho im not sure who is acualy incharge of setting up the time and date.

OVERALL I think some of mark's concerns that are posted are because of the lack of the HDGA board filling in the details of there meetings with the membership of the HDGA. I have noticed alot of the HDGA boards time is being dirverted into getting a new course going. That is wonderful any new courses would be welcome but It seams to me that it is at the cost of the current HDGA members.
Ditto, Bruce!!!
This is a fund raising project that the current HDGA board has decided would be in the best interest of raising monies.
Now for the rules that were voted on are as follows.
#1 All organized events run by the HDGA (scrambles, singles, doubles, etc) is when the "Throw To Win" will be held.
#2 The distance is 225' and the location of the tee will vary.
#3 The TD running the event will be selling members only the tickets at time of sign up, you then you will take the ticket to the person that is collecting them at the 225' mark of that day.
#4 All throws will be made at the practice basket from the 225' mark. If the shot is made and a member wins they will go to the Knitting Knight and take one of the portable baskets that the HDGA has there.
#5 After a basket has been won a new one will be purchased by the HDGA to replace the one that was awarded to the winning HDGA member.
First off all HDGA meetings are open to all HDGA members. We have a members forum were you can speak on whatever issues or ideas you have of concern. Secondly all of the minutes have been recorded at every meeting since the new election. And since you apparently have failed to show up at any of these meetings, or have not noticed in the posted minutes, that not much discussion time (if any) has been devoted to the talks of new courses.Least but not last is I would expect more from a former Vice President than to take cheap shots at the new board when you have not a clue one.

Thanks for sharing these details! I understand this effort to raise funds, although if this basket is won by someone soon, the replacement cost will be more than what was collected, and the HDGA will lose money. How about purchasing a mini basket for $100, and offering that as the prize?

First, Bruce expressed his concern at lack of openness with the HDGA board. It was not a cheap shot, and he has every right to express it. I share that concern, as do others, because they've expressed it to me. Next, I was told that Board meetings will be held that are not open to the full HDGA membership. If all meetings are open meetings, then why is there a secret discussion forum for Board members only? I frankly cannot imagine any subjects that should be discussed by officers to the exclusion of the membership. Can you provide examples of subjects about which the officers are engaging in discussion without the membership's right to at least awareness?

Respectfully, the money and assets belonging to the HDGA belong to all members, present and future. Discussion and decisions regarding expenditures as well as disposition of assets should include all members, all of the time, at all meetings. As you can see, this shroud of secrecy breeds mistrust.
The Board members page is a place were boards members communicate. It is the no different than us sending emails and making phone calls to each other. We also use it to post and review the minutes allowing all board members to read and approve of the minutes before the are posted publicly. Its a way for a board member to vote absentee. schedule the timing of meetings. The board member page has proven itself to be very very helpful and its very existence will remain in place.
Now as far as the "Throw To Win" issue is concerned. We will have a sign posted at the pavilion with rules at the next event and we will also tell every one about the information they need to participate( were the tee pad is located on that day etc.) is provided. All of the other issues about giving away a real basket have been discussed in great lengths during and open HDGA meeting. It was passed unanimously by all present board members to use the basket we already have.
